Using Alexa for Home Lighting Control

Using Alexa for Home Lighting Control

Finding the Words That Make Your System Work

Amazon Alexa and other voice control interfaces have revolutionized the way we interact with our smart homes. Homeowners who have never thought about integrating their technology have come around thanks to popular devices like Amazon’s Echo and Dot. One of the most common uses for them is home lighting control solutions. The convenience of voice control makes turning your lights on and off almost as fun as playing with the dimmer when you were a kid. In this blog, we’ll explore the different ways you can enjoy voice control with your smart lighting system.

“Alexa, turn on the lights.”

The quickest way to turn on every connected light in your home is with this simple command. Just say the words and watch every room brighten, from the bedroom to the bathroom and beyond. If you’re going to bed, you can simply ask Alexa to turn off the lights as well. Even though each Echo and Dot’s microphones have a limited range, your integrator can set up a number of them throughout your house and create a network, so you can reach every connected device no matter where you are.

“Alexa, turn off the kitchen lights.”

Most of the time, you don’t want to affect every single light in the house, but rather a single room. In those cases, your command can be more specific. Your integrator can install a lighting control system with specific zone controls, so all you have to do is name the space along with your command and watch as they obey.

“Alexa, turn off the second floor lights.”

Similarly, the different zones can also group into larger areas, so you can control entire floors or sections of your home without having to touch a light switch. Simply specify the customized name of the section of your home and watch what happens.

“Alexa, dim the hallway lights by 30 percent.”

Of course, you still retain total control over brightness. You can quickly dim any light to a specific percentage by telling it so, or allow Alexa to do the hard work by simply asking it to dim the lights.

“Alexa, start movie time.”

Don’t forget, you can have multiple devices integrated with a single scene command. Pre-programmed scenes help make setting up for movie time, dinner time and bed time that much easier. You can customize the name of the particular scene as well as the devices, so “movie time” could affect the lights, shades and AV gear you have in your media room.
