According to Reuters, Netflix plans to release 86 original films this year. And with growing critical and commercial success, thanks to movies like Mudbound and the Will Smith-starring Bright, they’re beginning to meet major studios on their own ground.
Netflix boasts 125 million subscribers, and their viewing numbers suggest people are engaging with their original content.
“Having more of its own films is paying off, Netflix said. The company told Reuters that the 33 Netflix films released so far this year have been watched more than 300 million times by more than 80 million account holders worldwide. That’s an average audience of more than 9 million viewers per film.”
As going out to the movies becomes more and more expensive, and streaming services become increasingly easier to access, it’s no wonder we’re seeing a shift in movie attendance. Viewers are choosing to stay home rather than deal with the hassle of going out.
